Building the Foundations Before Tafseer

Understanding the Qur’an deeply requires more than reading its translation. Our Qur’an Tafseer programme follows a structured learning pathway that gradually builds the knowledge and skills students need to understand the meanings, context, guidance, and lessons of the Qur’an.

Students are guided according to their age, educational level, and prior knowledge. Where necessary, foundational subjects are taught before progressing to deeper Tafseer studies.

1. Qur’an Reading & Tajweed

Students first develop a strong foundation in Qur’an reading, including correct pronunciation, Makharij, basic Tajweed rules, and fluent recitation.

2. Qur’anic Arabic & Vocabulary

Students are introduced to frequently used Qur’anic words, expressions, and roots. This helps them understand the language of the Qur’an rather than relying entirely on translation.

3. Arabic Grammar – Nahw

Students learn the essential principles of Arabic grammar needed to understand Qur’anic sentences, word relationships, and grammatical structures.

4. Arabic Morphology – Sarf

Students study the basic patterns and forms of Arabic words and verbs. This enables them to recognize how changes in word forms can affect meaning.

5. Introduction to Balaghah

At the appropriate level, students are introduced to selected principles of Arabic eloquence and Qur’anic expression to appreciate the depth and precision of the Qur’anic language.

6. Ulum al-Qur’an

Students learn essential Qur’anic sciences, including Makki and Madani revelation, the context of revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul), compilation of the Qur’an, and other foundational principles relevant to Tafseer.

7. Basic Hadith Studies

Students learn selected authentic Hadith and the role of the Sunnah in explaining and understanding Qur’anic teachings.

8. Qur’an Tafseer

After developing the necessary foundations, students progress to the study of Tafseer. Lessons explore the meaning and explanation of selected verses, relevant Qur’anic context, authentic Hadith, scholarly explanations, key lessons, and practical guidance.

Our Tafseer Learning Method

Each lesson is approached in a clear and structured way:

Qur’anic Verse → Vocabulary → Translation → Context → Explanation → Relevant Hadith → Key Lessons → Practical Application

Selected Reference Sources

Depending on the student’s level, lessons may draw upon recognized Tafseer and Islamic scholarly sources, including:

• Tafsir Ibn Kathir
• Tafsir al-Sa‘di
• Tafsir al-Baghawi
• Tafsir al-Tabari
• Tafsir al-Qurtubi
• Selected works on Ulum al-Qur’an and Hadith

The selection of books and depth of study will be adapted to the student’s age, Arabic proficiency, and level of Islamic knowledge.

Our aim is not simply to teach students the translation of Qur’anic verses, but to help them develop a sound and meaningful understanding of the Qur’an, appreciate its guidance, and apply its teachings in their daily lives with knowledge, sincerity, and good character.
